Biography

Hugh is a corporate finance partner, advising on buying and selling companies (often with a cross-border element), financing businesses (both debt and equity), joint venture/shareholder agreements, share option schemes, group re-organisations and general company law.  He leads much of the firm’s banking and finance work and acts for a number of Banks and financial institutions/investors, as well as assisting borrowers with their loan facility and security documents and on receiving investments.

Hugh is also head of our rapidly growing Shrewsbury office, and responsible for our trainee solicitors across the whole firm.

Hugh grew up on the Shropshire/Cheshire border, and served with the Shropshire & Staffordshire Yeomanry TA. After studying engineering at Exeter University, Hugh began his law career with several periods of work experience with Aaron & Partners. He studied law at Staffordshire University, and then spent many years as a partner in a large national firm in the East Midlands.

Hereditary deafness runs through the family – Hugh is partially deaf in both ears and is a long-term wearer of hearing aids, as is one of his daughters. Hugh has been very involved in support and fund-raising for the main UK charity for the deaf, RNID. Given his deafness, Hugh prefers advising his clients face to face or via Teams, rather than telephone.

Hugh is a trustee and Chairman of the Community Resource (a charity helping mitigate the effects of rural isolation and rural poverty across Shropshire) and also a Trustee of the Shropshire Youth Support Trust (a charity supporting young people into the world of self-employment and business).

Client feedback via The Legal 500
Hugh Strickland and Zoe Lloyd have shown a deep appreciation of commercial issues which we have found extremely helpful and reassuring. Deep understanding of legal matters is expected, but this commercial awareness is a welcome bonus.

I have worked with Hugh Strickland and Aaron & Partners for four years. Hugh was our legal advisor for four rounds of fund raising with venture capitalists and other investors. He also introduced us to his colleague Trish Randles who assisted us with several property deals. Hugh came highly recommended to me. He is efficient, astute, professional and very easy to work with. His wealth of experience meant he was able to guide us through complicated legal situations. We felt confident that we were in a safe pair of hands. There was also a dedicated professional team with him and they were always prepared to go the extra mile to assist us. We enjoyed working with Hugh, Charlotte and Phoebe very much, the contribution of the whole corporate/commercial team was vital to our success. I cannot recommend Hugh and his team highly enough. His professionalism and exemplary management made him and Aaron & Partners our go to legal advisors time and time again. Complicated deals can be tricky to manage and emotional for all involved but we have always had complete confidence in Hugh and wouldn’t hesitate to work with him again.

We provide software to early years education providers that allows them to keep in touch with parents and carers and manage everyday business tasks.  After deciding to expand our products and services into the U.K market we knew we would need expert legal advice to assist us with making our first acquisition.  Aaron & Partners came highly recommended to us by one of our investors. We were introduced to Hugh Strickland and were immediately impressed with his professionalism.  He worked very well with me and our in house legal team and was also able to introduce us to other trusted professionals to assist us with our business in the U.K. In addition to working with Hugh, Ben Mason advised us on employment law related matters which helped us enormously. Our first U.K acquisition was successfully completed due to our excellent working relationship with Hugh and Aaron & Partners.  It was a very positive experience and we were very impressed.  We wouldn’t hesitate to work with Hugh and Aaron and Partners again!

It was not an easy decision to sell our business when we were approached, but once we had agreed, we knew we’d need high quality legal advice to see us over the line. For over four years we have worked with several professionals at Aaron & Partners, so it made sense to call on their expertise again. This was quite a complicated deal as our Holdings company consisted of both a property company and an operating company and this meant our professional team had to deal with two sets of professional advisers on the sell side. However, Hugh Strickland and his team managed all aspects of the deal exceptionally well. They gave us useful, measured advice and always remained calm. Zoe Lloyd and Phoebe Bishton worked tirelessly alongside Hugh, building good rapport with their counterparts on the other side of the deal and ensuring that everything went as smoothly as possible. There was a huge amount of due diligence for us to deal with, but everything was handled very well and we were delighted! Aaron & Partners were extremely professional through the sale, keeping us involved and up to date at all times; it was a great collaboration! Selling our business was incredibly stressful but the team supported us every step of the way and made it as easy and painless as possible. We are very happy!

I run a private family office in Europe looking after both public and private market investments and was looking for some help with a UK-based lending deal we were putting together.  Hugh was recommended to us by a colleague who had worked with him previously.  In this type of transaction, a good contract is key to its success; there’s a lot of due diligence that needs to be undertaken to understand how it all fits together. Hugh was brought in to put together the loan agreement and other documentation relating to the security package, which is potentially a very complicated process due to the underlying structure and numerous corporate entities involved. Hugh made it all very simple and straightforward. He responded quickly and efficiently to emails and made it very clear what needed to be done by whom and by when, what parts would be his responsibility and what else needed to happen.  There was no waffle or ambiguity - no cracks - which I really valued. Previously I have been used to working with internal departments in large organisations and the speed at which this project was completed, thanks to Hugh, was remarkable and something I might normally expect to take weeks was completed within a few days. I’ve learned a lot from the way Hugh works and have mimicked his approach to communication.  We’ve something in the pipeline for which we’ll definitely be engaging Hugh again.
Client, Europe
I have known Hugh for over 20 years, he is a pragmatic and skillful lawyer whose incisive grasp of complex situations enables transactions to get completed and agreements between the bank and customers to be reached. Hugh has a personable approach and an extensive knowledge of the lender’s needs. Highly recommended.

It has been great having Hugh back on our panel. He instinctively knows exactly what issues the Bank is concerned about, and comes up with pro-active solutions to them – he is commercial, pragmatic and extremely well organised, Aaron and Partners deliver an excellent service to us.

When the time came to sell our family business, we met with several law firms – Hugh Strickland from Aaron & Partners came to see us and he demonstrated from the outset that he knew what needed to be done, had done this many times before, would look after us throughout the deal and give us top quality advice. We never once regretted appointing Aarons – this deal was a one off for us, but Hugh, Katie Dyson and the rest of the team really looked after us and provided brilliant support, making the process as smooth as possible. Any complications that arose were quickly dealt with, to support all of the family members involved.

Having owned and invested in our hotel for twenty five years we knew we would need a trusted legal team to assist us once we had decided to sell.  We felt that this was a sensitive sale as our hotel is a reputable wedding venue with many bookings and guests to consider as well as a loyal team of employees.  We had to ensure the sale went through smoothly and seamlessly to avoid any disruption to the business. We had successfully worked with Trish Randles on a land deal so looked to Aaron and Partners again to assist us and were introduced to Hugh Strickland. We were glad we did as Hugh and his team were very professional, reliable and efficient. We worked mainly with Zoe Lloyd but also had dealings with Phoebe Bishton. We developed a great working relationship with them both and Hugh was always there to oversee the sale. The team made the sale of our business hassle free, dealing with everything professionally including the buyers challenging legal team! I had complete confidence in them. They were flexible, helpful and kept me up to date at all times. It was a great partnership and I would be happy to work with them again.
