Mandatory Mask Wearing

Despite the British Medical Association (BMA) advice to the contrary and pressure from unions representing transport and retail workers, the Government has announced that mandatory mask wearing is likely to cease in England from 19 July.

The news has divided many opinions and following this a number of employers, including Ryanair, have already announced that they will impose continued mandatory mask wearing, with others confirming they will “support” continued mask wearing.

As restrictions begin to ease, employers will be facing a period of uncertainty and so they must continue to be flexible in their approach. Employers should review and update their COVID workplace risk assessments to establish whether changes are required to their policy on mask wearing within the workplace.

Clear communication will be key, and employers should consult with their employees and ensure that any new policy change is clearly expressed, and all staff understand the standards expected. If employers are concerned, then we would always recommend seeking professional legal advice.
