Over 120,000 couples divorce each year in England and Wales. In addition, there are married couples who decide not to divorce, but feel they can no longer live together and just wish to separate.
For those living together, the rates of separation are greater than for married couples. For civil partners, although the number entering into civil partnerships rose in 2012 to over 7,000, the dissolution figures have also continued to rise to over 800. The first same-sex marriage only took place in March 2014, so there are no statistics available yet for the rates of separation.
